Gyrostatic Bicycle (ART558E)

Paging through old magazines, we came across an edition of the Electrical Experimenter of May 1919 with a very interesting idea, explored at the time in school demonstrations on the principle of operation of the gyroscope. We have already explored the subject in a story of Prof. Ventura (Professor Ventura in: Fast delivery (NVENT012E)), but it is very interesting to see how the technology was well explored 100 years ago.

We know from physics that the moment of inertia of a disk which spins at high speed and that has considerable mass is responsible for the action of the gyroscope. This principle of physics is widely used in inertial sensors of vital importance for the balance of robots and the stability of drones today.

Well, the idea of the bicycle is to show that due to the great inertia of any change in direction of movement that the gyroscope presents, it is not possible to change the direction of the bicycle, just going back and forth, not even falling.
