Description: Four independent R-S flip-flops are found in this package. The device has a common tri-state enable control for the four flip-flops.

Functional Diagram and/or Package:

Pin Names:

Vdd - Positive Supply Voltage [3V to 15V]

Vss - Ground

S1, S2, S3, S4 - Set

RST1, RST2, RST3, RST4 - Reset

Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 - Outputs

EN - Enable

NG - Not Connected

Truth Table

Operation Mode:

  • In normal operation, S and RST are “0.

  • When S and RST are “1' the output goes to “1“ This is a disallowed state.

  • When EN is “0”, the output goes to the third state [high-impedance state]. With the input EN=1, the outputs are connected to the internal circuit.

Electrical Characteristics:

Other Devices:

The 4044 is similar, but it has NAND inputs.

Applications:

  • Strobed Registers

  • Digital Logic

  • Holding Registers [for Multimode Register Systems]

  • Four Bits of Independent Storage

Observations:

Stages using this device may not be cascaded and are not suitable for counters or shift registers.
