The idea of transmitting information across distances using wire is not new, although some of it has been quite strange, worthy of jokes as we have reported. In 1789, Francisco Salva, placed 22 pairs of wires interconnecting two cities with a 50 km distance of each other. The idea was to transmit messages through 22 different symbols, letters of the alphabet, for example, but the way the transmission was made and received is very interesting. In the transmitter it was placed a high voltage generator, able to give a good shock in who touched it. At the receiver, when a message was to be transmitted, 22 "volunteers" were placed holding the wire pairs, each corresponding a letter of the alphabet or symbol. The transmission process was simple. Wishing to transmit the letter "B", it would touch with the high voltage generator on the corresponding pair of the transmitter and immediately the unhappily volunteer corresponding to the letter B took a beautiful strike shouting "B", which was noted by another employee. Touching the wires of the transmitter, shocks were produced in the receiver and the unhappy ones shouted out the letters that were written down! It worked, but it certainly was not very practical. This weird invention was from Spain.
