Launched in 2017 the Microchip CL88020 is an LED driver optimized for 120 VAC input applications with an output power of 8.5 W. In this article we do a small analysis of this component giving practical applications that are of great importance in these days when the LED lighting has a highlight in all environments.

The Microchip C88020 integrated circuit consists of a 4-way linear sequential LED driver optimized for applications in the 120 Vac network with an input variation of +/- 15%.

The main application of this component is to excite a long ribbon of low cost LEDs directly from the power grid in a typical circuit as shown in figure 1.

The CL88020 has protection features such as automatic power reduction (light level) when the temperature rises.

At the same time, it provides constant brightness of the LEDs even under voltage variations of the power line.

Another important point is that the circuit is compatible with dimmers using triacs.

The CL88020 is supplied in an 8-pin SOIC enclosure with the pinout shown in Figure 2.
