Figure bellow shows how n flip-flops can be associated to perform a shift register. Data is shifted one cell with each pulse of the clock. This is a SIPO or SISO. This circuit can be used to store a n bit word. The block in the input is any inverter, such as the 4049. The maximum input frequency depends on the power-supply voltage and is 12.5 MHz with 10 V.
