“They informed me that it is not convenient to use a cell phone during a storm, as nearby rays can damage them. Truth?"

This belief comes from the ancients who recommended not using electrical devices during storms. In fact, such devices being connected to the power grid could be damaged and even cause discharges to people using them if lightning strikes the power grid close to the location. Transients could spread through the network and cause damage to connected equipment and even reach people. In the case of cell phones, this does not occur, however, during a strong lightning storm it is still recommended that sensitive devices such as cordless phones, LCDs, televisions, computers and others have their plugs disconnected from the outlets. Lightning in the nearby power pole causes transients that propagate through the wires and can damage the connected devices.
