“I downloaded an application to listen to radio over the internet, but when I leave home, the signal from the tuned station disappears. Can you tell what happens?”

As the application indicates, the signal does not come through the air, but through the internet and the computer that connects the cell phone goes via WiFi. If you use mobile data then the signal comes through your cellular network and is reproduced. Anyway, it is not the direct signal from the broadcaster. For example, if you tune in to a station that normally operates at 90 MHz of FM, when using the application the signal you receive has nothing to do with that frequency. It is just the audio signal coming over the Internet that reaches your cell phone, either via WiFi or via your cellular network.
