Each diode causes a voltage drop of about 0.7 V. This means that three diodes will reduce the applied voltage by 2.1 V. Starting from a 6 V power supply, you can power a motor with 6 or 3.9 V in a two-speed system. The diodes are 1N4002, which are suitable for motors up to 1 A.
