I found this circuit in a Modern Electronics from June 1990. The American magazine no longer exists, but this circuit can be used on a modulated infrared link with one or more high power LEDs, preferably red. R3 determines the peak current on the LED that must be consulted in its datasheet. FET Q1 supports equivalents and the supply voltage depends on the application.
