A neon lamp and a resistor are all you need to determine the live and neutral pole of an outlet, detect faults in appliances and discover interruptions or shorts in cables. Holding one of the poles of this probe, we have two possible operating conditions: if on the other side we have the live pole of the supply, there will be enough voltage to ionize the gas of the lamp that will then light, and if on the other side we have the neutral pole, we will not have the ionization voltage and the lamp will remain off. The device can be mounted on a tube as shown in the figure, and remember that its operation only occurs with voltages greater than 80 V.
