This circuit can source 3 to 12 V with currents up to 500 mA depending only on the transformer. The secondary winding of the transformer must have voltage some volts higher than the desired voltage in the output. The zenner must have 0.6 V above the voltage desired in the output. The transistor must be mounted on a heatsink.
