“AM broadcasts are expected to stop shortly. What will happen to current broadcasters and people who have common AM radios?”

As in the case of digital TV, conventional AM broadcasts will not end suddenly. There will be a gradual transition with the stations moving to the FM band, where they can continue with their normal programming. In the AM band, then digital stations will appear that will need a special receiver to receive their signals, as in the case of digital TV. Thus, AM receivers can still be used for a few years, while the stations make the transition. After the last common AM broadcaster ceases to operate then the receiver of this type will be a thing of the past and will no longer receive any broadcasters (except for experimental broadcasts made with homemade or didactic devices).
