I am looking to buy a multimeter. It is my first. Should I buy analog or digital type?

For the beginner, the ideal type of multimeter is analog because we can see variations in the magnitude measured by the movement of the pointer. There are also component tests (such as capacitors) where it is more important to see if the pointer moves than to have a numerical value indicated, as with the digital multimeter, which has no pointer. So my suggestion is that your first multimeter be analog. Economical, preferably until you learn how to use it and then buy a digital one, but always have both, as there will be tests where the analog is better and tests where the digital is better. See our instrumentation section for articles on how to use this instrument and look forward to having a course available soon.
