This electromagnetic version of the process of getting lucky with a coin, in addition to making it more interesting, hampers any attempt to cheat by the effects the way the coin is thrown.

 

We use in this assembly a single component that is a solenoid.

 

This component, when being driven by an electric current, violently pulls a plunger, which flips a coin upwards. In figure 1 we give a suggestion of how to use a box for the assembly of the device.

 

 


 

 

 

The circuit can be powered either by common batteries or by a small power supply. As the apparatus operates according to principles of electromagnetism, it can be used as a basis for science work or in parallel activities (transversal theme) in fundamental and medium courses.

 

Its operation is simple: when an electric current travels the coil (solenoid), a strong magnetic field is created inside. The intensity of this field depends both on the intensity of the current and on the number of turns of the wire that we roll.

 

If an object of ferrous material is placed inside the solenoid, part called a "core", when the current is established and the field is formed, it will be strongly attracted to the interior, as suggested in figure 2.

 

 


 

 

 

In our case, we dimension the solenoid so that it can be powered by common batteries. This solenoid is mounted in an upright position having as its core a screw or other cylindrical metal object that can slide smoothly inside.

 

When the chain is established the bolt is pulled into the solenoid by throwing the coin up.

 

In figure 3 we have the simple circuit of this device, as well as the characteristics of the solenoid.

The power supply is made with medium or large batteries, given the current required. If a power supply is used it must be at least 6 V x 250 V and at most 12 V with 1 A.

 

The coil consists of 50 meters of 28 or 30 AWG enamelled wire in a 2 cm long cardboard spool with an inner diameter of 0.5 cm.

 

The coin should be lightweight for greater launch efficiency. The power switch is a "bell button" type.

 

To test and use the appliance, simply position the core and the coin and push the switch. Check if it is necessary to use some kind of shim under the core for the desired effects to be achieved.
