In this experiment we can visualize the arrangement of the lines of force of the magnetic field created around a magnet. We also find that this field crosses objects such as a sheet of paper or wood and we find that its action at a distance can move the needle of a compass.

 

 

   What to explain:

 

   Explain that around a magnet there is a special condition of space, called the magnetic field. "

   This field can be represented by lines of force that show how the forces are exerted by the magnet on bodies placed in those places.

   Show that if iron filings are scattered on a sheet of paper and a magnet is placed underneath this sheet, the filament will be subject to the forces of the magnet and will arrange to follow the lines of force.

   The approximate image of the layout of the field lines is then obtained, as shown in figure 1.

Show on a poster that the field lines are closed lines that extend from one pole to the other.

   Also show that if the magnet is moved under a sheet of paper, on top a clip or pin is subject to its forces, accompanying the movement, see figure 1.

   Finally, show that the magnet acts on the needle of the compass by moving it.
