Portable tube radios at that time were powered by batteries. They weren't economical, but they were the alternatives for those who needed or could. In the figure we have a typical example of a portable receiver from 1939 whose diagram was found in a publication of the time. The high voltage came from two 45V batteries which then supplied 90V.
