This extremely simple circuit was found in an American publication called Electronics Handbook, Volume XIII of 1993. The circuit uses a resistor of 12k Ω and two LEDs, one green and the other red. When connecting the line under test, one of the LEDs should light, depending on line polarity. It can be used a two-color LED for ease of course a more modern version used a current connector.
