This circuit was found in a Popular Electronics from 1991. The transistor could be the BC548. The circuit drives a range of LEDs. The sensor (probes) can be formed by two pieces of stripped wires. Power can come from the battery or source. The sensitivity adjustment is made in R4, which can be 47 k, current commercial value.
