This circuit is from a 1978 publication. It can be assembled with BC548 transistors for NPN and BC558 for PNP. It can be supplied with voltages from 9 to 12 V and LEDs are common. The 100k potentiometer at the input adjusts the sensitivity. It is convenient to place a 1k resistor in series with this component so as not to short the input.
