We found this circuit in a Radio Shack documentation from 1977. The circuit serves for a link of light modulated in amplitude by an audio signal reproduced in a low impedance phone. The circuit must be powered by a symmetrical 6 or 9 V source. Replacing the phone with a 470 ohms resistor, the signal can be removed for use in an external amplifier.
