The oscillator shown generates a rectangular output signal at a frequency of 5 MHz, determined by the crystal. The circuit can be used as a clock for digital measuring instruments that require a crystal time base for greater accuracy. The 1.2 nF capacitor must be ceramic and the circuit can operate with frequency crystals in the range of 1 MHz to 5 MHz, without problems.
