We found this simple transistor tester in a French publication in 1981. It uses a common analog indicator to give an idea of the gain of the transistor under test. It has sockets for testing NPN and PNP transistors. The circuit is powered by ordinary batteries and the indicator, in fact, can have full scale from 1 mA to 2.5 mA.
