This is the traditional configuration of a 6 or 12 V source with 7806 or 7812 integrated circuits, for a maximum output current of 1 A. The integrated circuit must be fitted with a heatsink and the maximum output current, up to 1 A, will be given by the maximum secondary current of the transformer used. The electrolytic capacitor must be at least 12 V for the 6 V source and at least 25 V for the 12 V.
