This circuit was found in an 80's Radio Electronics. The idea is to use a home-built pH-sensitive device as a sensor. This sensor consists of two separate electrodes, one copper and one lead. When rainwater hits them and has some acidity, a lead-acid battery is formed that generates a small voltage detected by the circuit.
