This circuit is suggested by National Semiconductor and makes use of the negative regulator LM2990 which is available in voltages of 5, 12 and 15 volts (according to suffix - Ex: LM2990T - 12 = 12 V). The maximum output current is 1 ampere and the voltage drop in the integrated circuit is typically 0.6 to 1 A. The input voltage can range from - 26 V to + 0.3 V.
