This circuit is from an old Motorola manual (1999) using an integrated circuit that is not very common today. The circuit consists of a serial shield for multiplexed 7-segment displays. Bits 1 through 4 control the decimal points. From 5 to 8 to digit 1, from 9 to 12 the digit 2, from 13 to 15 the digit 3 and from 17 to 20 the digit 4.
