This is a project that can easily be adapted for other purposes such as counting people, objects, everything depending on the sensor. Even the count limit, which is 999, can be modified for the desired application. The sensor type, which is optical, can also be changed and thanks to the presence of the monostable 555 you can use contact sensors such as micro-switches, reed switches or even electronic drive circuits.
