The circuit is from the United States Hands-On Electronics magazine, February 1987 edition. The magazine no longer exists, but the circuit can be assembled as a pair of BF245 transistors. The sensor is a telescopic antenna or simply a piece of stiff common wire. Adjustment of balance is done in R7 and full scale in R6. For better operation, look for an instrument with zero in the center of the scale.
