The battery charger suggested in the figure has its current limited by resistor R1. This component may have values for slower loads (higher output impedance). The integrated circuit must be mounted on a good heat radiator and the maximum output current is 3 amps. The formula next to the diagram allows to calculate the value of the output current (load current) as a function of the resistors. The circuit is suggested by National Semiconductor.
