The circuit shown in the figure consists of a phase shift oscillator and its components have been calculated to produce a signal of approximately 1 kHz. For other frequencies the components can be calculated from the formula given next to the diagram. The signal is sinusoidal and other transistors can be tried. The circuit can produce signals of up to a few tens of kHz without problems.
